John W. Tinker Sr

John W. Tinker Sr., 86, of Squire Lane died yesterday afternoon at Fairview Commons, where he had resided for a few days. Born April 2, 1918 in Torrington, Conn., son of George W. and Helen Schmalsteig Tinker, he attended schools in Sheffield. An Army veteran of World War II, he enlisted in 1940 and was honorably discharged in 1945. He worked for John Ormsbee and then the Berkshire Collaborative program, where he was a school bus driver, retiring in 1984. Prior to that, he owned and operated Berkshire Hills Dairy in Great Barrington. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church. He was also a member of the James A. Modolo VFW Post 8348 in Great Barrington. He and his wife, the former Mary Bell, were married on May 20, 1944, in Winkfield, England. Besides his wife, he leaves a son John W. Tinker Jr. of Great Barrington; a daughter, Elizabeth M. Rockefeller of Housatonic, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial celebration for the late John W. Tinker Sr. of Sheffield will be held on Saturday, May 8, 2004, at Christ Episcopal Church in Sheffield at 2 with the Rev. Annie Ryder officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 1:30 until the time of the service at the church. He leaves his grandchildren, Tracey Ann Hopkins and her husband, Russell, of South Lee; Melissa Lynn Nimmons and her husband, Thomas, of Cheshire, and Dennis Malcolm Tinker of Great Barrington, along with four great-grandchildren, Makayla and Garrett Hopkins and Michael and Christopher Nimmons.
