Donald Richard Dean

Donald Richard Dean, 72, of Ashland Park Apartments, formerly of 77 Smith Ave., Williamstown, died Friday at North Adams Regional Hospital, where he was admitted earlier in the day. Born in Roxbury on Nov. 5, 1931, son of Obediah J. and Evelyn Cooley Dean, he was raised in Chester and graduated in 1949 from Chester High School, where he was vice president of his class. He also attended the School of Practical Arts in Boston, studying cartoon animation. He had resided in Goshen until moving to Williamstown in the 1990s. A Navy veteran of the Korean War, he served from 1952 to 1956. He received several decorations, including a Presidential Unit Citation Medal from the Republic of Korea. Mr. Dean was employed by Cartland Grinding Wheels Co. in Chester as a shipping clerk. He also worked as a short-order cook for several restaurants in the Goshen area and for a book binding company. He enjoyed reading, painting and gardening. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Graveside services for Donald Richard Dean, who died May 14, 2004, will take place at a later date in the veterans' section of Southview Cemetery, North Adams. There will be no calling hours. Memorial donations are suggested for a charity of the donor's choice through FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, WEST CHAPELS, 521 West Main St., North Adams. Mr. Dean leaves several friends.
