Sophie Moderski

Sophie Moderski, 92, of 2 Cedar Lane died Tuesday at Williamstown Commons. Born in South Deerfield on May 28, 1912, daughter of Joseph and Sophia Milewski Butkiewicz, she graduated from South Deerfield High School and from the former Northampton Commercial College. Mrs. Moderski was employed for many years by the former Comp Care, retiring in 1982. She also had worked at the former Berkshire Hathaway and at the former Sprague Electric Co. in North Adams. She had participated in the operation of Karen's School of Dance, owned by her daughter, Karen Rougeau, for 27 years. Mrs. Moderski was a communicant of St. Stanislaus' Church. She took great pride in her flower gardens. Her husband, Philip F. Moderski, whom she married Aug. 30, 1947, died April 6, 1969. Besides her daughter, of Adams, she leaves a brother, Victor Butkiewicz of Spencer, a granddaughter and three stepgrandsons. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Sophie Moderski, who died June 8, 2004, will be Saturday, June 12, at 10:30 from TROTTIER-PRINGLE FUNERAL HOME, 6 Summer St., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 11:30 in St. Stanislaus Kostka Church by the Rev. Daniel J. Boyle, pastor of the Parishes of Notre Dame-St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Stanislaus. Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus' Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Stanislaus' School in care of the funeral home. She leaves her granddaughter, Mackenzie Rougeau, and three stepgrandsons, Dwane Rougeau, Daryl Rougeau and Robert Rougeau. She was predeceased by six brothers, Charles, Alexander, Joseph, Stanley, Anthony and Edwin Butkiewicz, and a sister, Stella Butkiewicz.
