Earl F. Appleton Sr

Earl F. Appleton Sr., 74, of 33 Grove St. died at his home Thursday. Born in Pittsfield on Oct. 10, 1929, son of Herbert D. and Evelyn G. Herrick Appleton, he was a 1947 graduate of Pittsfield High School. He served with the National Guard for three years and then with the Navy in the construction battalion for three years. He was employed for 38 years at Lipton Steel in Pittsfield, retiring in 1987 as a shop supervisor. Mr. Appleton was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, a lifetime member of the Elks Post 272 and a member of the Lanesboro Lions Club where he had been awarded the Melvin Jones Award. He was also an avid sportsman. He leaves his wife, the former Beverly Connors, whom he married June 14, 1952. Survivors include his two sons, Earl F. Appleton Jr. of Hinsdale and Michael Appleton of Lanesboro; a sister, Charlotte M. Cahalen of Pittsfield; seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Earl F. Appleton Sr., who died on June 10, 2004, will be Monday at 10 at the WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield with the Rev. Gwen Sears officiating. Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be on Sunday from 2 to 5. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to either HospiceCare in the Berkshires or to the Lanesboro Lions Club in care of the funeral home at 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
