Asher E. Treat

Asher E. Treat, 96, of Jerusalem Road died June 8 at Kimball Farms Nursing Care Center in Lenox. Born in Antigo, Wis., on July 6, 1907, son of Asher R. and Pearl Barnes Treat, he was a 1925 graduate of Antigo High School. He earned a bachelor's degree in zoology in 1929 from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and a doctorate in physiology from the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University. An Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, he served as an aviation physiologist with the rank of captain. A professor of biology at City College of New York, Mr. Treat was an acarologist and entomologist, publishing many scholarly articles and the book, "Mites of Moths & Butterflies." He also was an accomplished French horn player, and played briefly with the New York Philharmonic under Arturo Toscanini. His wife, the former Julia Gilder, whom he married in October 1939, died Sept. 9, 1987. He leaves a son, Bryan G. Treat of South Lee; a stepdaughter, Philippa Claude of Madison, two grandchildren and a great-grandson. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Mr. Asher E. Treat, who died June 8, 2004, also leaves his daughter-in-law, Susan Carty Treat of South Lee; his son-in-law, Tony Stretton of Madison; his granddaughters and their husbands, Heather and William Ketchen of Tyringham and Stephanie and Jeffrey Slade of Dalton, and his great-grandson, Dakota Ketchen of Tyringham. A memorial gathering will be held in Tyringham in mid-August. Memorial donations may be made to the Tyringham Volunteer Fire Company or the Lee Regional Visiting Nurses Association in care of KELLY FUNERAL HOME, 3 Main St., Lee, MA 01238.
