Rita Ann Hewitt Burgess

Rita Ann Hewitt Burgess, 73, formerly of 1095 Mohawk Trail died early yesterday morning at Williamstown Commons, where she had resided for some time. Born in Adams on Sept. 6, 1930, daughter of Frederick J. and Selma Leppelt Careau, she attended schools there, including the former Adams High School. Mrs. Burgess was employed in the jewelry department at the former Kmart store. Before that, she had worked at the former Mohawk Chief and at the Signet Club, both in Adams. Her first husband, Harold Hewitt, is deceased. Her husband, Robert D. Burgess, whom she married June 24, 1973, died June 29, 1976. She leaves her adopted daughter, Colleen M. Cutler of Adams; two sisters, Ellen Leitch of Pittsfield and Irene Shaw of Adams, and three grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Rita Burgess, who died June 16, 2004, will be Saturday at 11:15 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, followed by a Funeral Mass celebrated at noon at St. Thomas' Church, Adams, by the Rev. Daniel J. Boyle, pastor of the Parishes of Notre Dame-St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Stanislaus Kostka. Burial will be in Bellevue Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Contributions may be made to the Berkshire Humane Society in care of the funeral home. Survivors include three grandchildren, James Cutler, Aimee Cutler and Michelle Cutler, and a nephew, John Moyer. Her longtime companion, George Busby, died in 2003, and a brother, Francis Careau, is deceased.
