Ruth Miriam Young

Ruth Miriam Young, 87, of 8 Castle Hill Road, Glendale, died yesterday at Fairview Commons in Great Barrington. Born in Pittsfield on April 17, 1917, daughter of Edward and Margaret McGarry Young, she attended Glendale and Stockbridge schools and graduated in 1933 as valedictorian from the former Williams High School. She received a bachelor of arts cum laude and departmental honor in English in 1937 from the College of New Rochelle, N.Y., and a master's degree in education in 1950 from New York University. She also attended Fordham University. Mrs. Young was principal of Fairfield School in Massapequa, N.Y., from 1952 until 1956, then of Birch Lane School, also in Massapequa, until retiring in 1973. Prior to that, she taught in New Rochelle schools for six years and in Massapequa schools for nine years. After retiring, she was a tour guide at the former Corner House Rockwell museum for several years. She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church, and a teacher and organizer of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine classes for many years. She also directed the stewardship appeal and fuel collection for 20 years and was a longtime member of the Altar Guild. She leaves her niece, Elizabeth Weger of Hawthorne Woods, Ill. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Ruth M. Young, who died June 30, 2004, will be Saturday at 9:15 from KELLY FUNERAL HOME in Lee, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Joseph's Church, Stockbridge. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Stockbridge. Visiting hours will be tomorrow, July 2, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Friends wishing may make donations to St. Joseph's Church in care of the funeral home, 3 Main St., Lee, MA 01238. Miss Young leaves her niece and her husband, Elizabeth and Steve Weger; her grandniece, Christine Foster; her grandnephew, Robert Weger, and her great-grandnephews Sean and Braden Foster, all of Illinois. She was predeceased by her sisters Helen, Mary and Elizabeth, and her brother, Paul.
