Carmen E. Bassi

Carmen E. Bassi, 93, of 75 Commercial St. died yesterday morning at Williamstown Commons, where she had resided since 2002. She had been a longtime resident of Burt Street. Born in North Adams on April 30, 1911, daughter of Ciro and Rose Tassone Macchia, she attended schools there. Mrs. Bassi had been employed as a shipping technician by the former Sprague Electric Co. on North Adams from 1968 to 1973, when she retired. Previously, she had worked at the former Berkshire Fine Spinning Corp. A communicant of the Parishes of Notre Dame and St. Thomas Aquinas, she was a member of the St. Thomas Rosary Sodality. Her husband, Joseph Bassi, whom she married May 30, 1935, died May 29, 1981. She leaves two sons, Michael D. Bassi of Adams and Joseph S. Bassi of Spofford, N.H., five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Another son, Peter R. Bassi, died Nov. 10, 2003. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Carmen Bassi will be celebrated Monday, July 19, at 10 in St. Thomas Aquinas Church. Burial will follow in the family plot in Bellevue Cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday from 4 to 7 at the McBRIDE FUNERAL HOME, 6 Liberty St. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be offered to St. Thomas Parish's St. Vincent DePaul Society or the charity of the donor's choice through the funeral home. She also leaves her daughters-in-law, Linda, Paula and Nancy. She was predeceased by two sisters, Antoinette Zappone and Rose Cramer, and a brother, Michael Macchia.
