Dr. Robert S. Cleaver

Dr. Robert S. Cleaver, 84, of Kimball Farms died Sunday at its nursing care center. Born in Brewster, N.Y., on April 14, 1920, son of Dr. Robert Cleaver and Lucy McGrath Cleaver, he graduated from Brewster High School, attended Taft School in Watertown, Conn., for a year, and graduated from Williams College in 1942. He graduated from Cornell University Medical College in 1945 and was certified in radiology in 1952. He lived in Fairfield, Conn., until moving to Kimball Farms in 1992. An Army Medical Corps veteran, he served in the occupation of Japan from 1946 to 1947 and was discharged with the rank of captain. He was recalled for active duty during the Korean War, serving until 1953. Dr. Cleaver joined the radiology partnership of Lockhart and Esposito, later renamed Bridgeport (Conn.) Radiology Associates. He also was associated with the radiology department of Bridgeport Hospital, retiring in 1985. He volunteered for the annual book sale at the Pequot Library in Southport, Conn., and was a member of the Bridgeport School Volunteer Association, tutoring second grades in reading at the Maplewood School for many years. He and his wife, the former Alma A. Pepernik, were married April 30, 1949. Besides his wife he leaves two sons, Richard J. Cleaver of Lee and Robert C. Cleaver of Erieville, N.Y., and two grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Dr. Robert S. Cleaver, who died July 25, 2004, will be conducted Wednesday, July 28, at 11 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Lenox by the Rev. Stephen P. Booth, rector. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery in Lee. There will be no visiting hours. KELLY FUNERAL HOME in Lee is in charge of arrangements. Dr. Cleaver leaves his grandchildren Stephinie and Robert.
