Grace Anna Duffy

Grace Anna Duffy, 90, died yesterday at Berkshire Medical Center. She had resided at Hillcrest Commons since March. Born in the Bronx, N.Y., on Jan. 3, 1914, daughter of John C. Duffy Sr. and Anastasia Sinclair Duffy, she moved to New Lebanon, N.Y., in the 1920s and graduated from New Lebanon High School in 1933. She earned her bachelor of science degree in education in 1968 and her master's degree in education in 1973, both from the University of Miami. She had lived in New York City, with her aunt Helen Sinclair, and Brooklyn after high school, then moved to Miami in 1952. Ms. Duffy taught English and reading at St. Michael's School in Miami, retiring in 1979. She then moved to Albany, N.Y., where she was a substitute teacher and also worked for the Civil Service Employees Association (CSEA). In her younger years, she worked at a foundling orphanage in New York City and for the University of Miami medical research department. She was a communicant of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Albany. She enjoyed traveling and reading. While in Miami, she was active with St. Michael's Church, where she taught Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. She leaves many nieces and nephews. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial for Grace Anna Duffy, who died July 27, 2004, will be celebrated Thursday at 10 in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Route 20, New Lebanon, N.Y., by the Rev. John L. Close, pastor, and Deacon James A. Hager, Ms. Duffy's nephew. Interment will take place Friday at 11 in the family plot in Gates of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, N.Y. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of HALL & HIGGINS FUNERAL HOME of Stephentown. She was predeceased by two brothers, John in 1938 and Thomas in 1985.
