Isadore John Mendel

Isadore John Mendel, 88, of 51 Glen St. died yesterday morning at North Adams Regional Hospital shortly after being admitted. Born in Adams on April 2, 1916, son of John and Caroline Offiara Mendel, he attended schools there. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Mendel was employed by the former Adams Super Market Corp. for more than 50 years, retiring as meat department supervisor 25 years ago. He served on the Adams Board of Health from 1984 to 1993, and was a town meeting member from 1983 to 1991. He was a communicant of St. Stanislaus' Church and an active longtime member of Adams Lodge of Elks, Adams Post 160 American Legion and the Berk-shire County Sheriff's Association. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, playing cards and doing handiwork. He and his wife, the former Nellie R. Chrostowski, would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary Sept. 4. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Richard I. Mendel of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Allen J. Mendel of Adams; a sister, Cecelia Lattizzori of Pittsfield; eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Isadore Mendel will be Thursday at 9 from AUGE-PACIOREK-SIMMONS FUNERAL HOME, 13 Hoosac St., Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church celebrated by the Rev. Daniel J. Boyle, pastor of the Parishes of St. Stanislaus Kostka and Notre Dame-St. Thomas Aquinas. Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Kostka Cemetery. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the Adams Ambulance Service, the VNA & Hospice of Northern Berkshire or to the REACH Foundation at North Adams Regional Hospital through the funeral home. He also leaves his daughters-in-law, Dr. Susan Urba of Ann Arbor and Suzanne Mendel of Adams. He was predeceased by four brothers, Francis, William, Michael and Matthew Mendel, and by three sisters, Michalina Mendel, Caroline Wojcik and Helen Modzelewski.
