Jeddie P. Brooks Sr

Jeddie P. Brooks Sr., 79, of 409 Haskins Road died yesterday at home following a long illness. A Savoy resident for 53 years, he served as selectman, School Committee member, sealer of weights and measures, tree warden and town moderator. Born in Clarksburg on Jan. 9, 1925, son of Jeddie F. and Edith A. Revoir Brooks, he was educated in Adams schools. He attended a veterans' night school for his high school credits and Chauncy Hall Pre-School in Boston, graduating from Franklin Technical Institute in Boston. An Army veteran of World War II, he joined the 10th Mountain Division in February 1943 and was wounded in Italy in April 1945. He received a Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medal. He was one of 30 handpicked men who made the night climb up Riva Ridge with ropes and pitons to start the push for the Po Valley that ended with the German surrender at Lake Garda. Mr. Brooks worked for GE in Pittsfield for 36 years in plant engineering as a building construction engineer and as a registered land surveyor. He was a senior designer in the power transformer division. He also was a part-time ski instructor and director of the Otis Ridge Junior Ski Camp. He enjoyed working in the outdoors, woodworking, remodeling projects, mowing his lawn and fields and building stone walls. He was a communicant of St. Thomas' Church in Adams and a member of the 10th Mountain Division Association, the Hoosac Valley Motorcycle Club and Disabled American Veterans. He and his wife, the former Lenore R. Harrington, were married Feb. 18, 1950. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, the Rev. Jeddie P. Brooks of St. Patrick's Church in Monson and St. Christopher's Church in Brimfield; a daughter, Cathrine Brooks-Sanginetti of Pittsfield; two brothers, Robert Brooks of Morristown, Fla., and Michael Brooks of Odessa, Fla.; three sisters, Esther Kelly of Springfield, Marion Baran of Adams and Carole Favreau of Sarasota, Fla., and two grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Jeddie P. Brooks Sr., who died Aug. 9, 2004, will be Friday, Aug. 13, at 10 from AUGE-PACIOREK-SIMMONS FUNERAL HOME, Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 11 in St. Thomas Aquinas Church by his son, the Rev. Jeddie P. Brooks. Burial will be Monday in Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Agawam. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Thursday from 5 to 8. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations in his memory be made to the College Assistance Scholarship Fund, 10th Mountain Division Foundation Inc. or VNA & Hospice of Northern Berkshire in care of the funeral home, 13 Hoosac St., Adams 01220. Survivors include a son-in-law, Michael Sanginetti, and two grandchildren, Nicholas and Carly Sanginetti.
