William Francis Powers Jr

William Francis Powers Jr., 73, of Great Egret Circle, Sunset Beach, N.C., formerly of Lee, died Friday at Brunswick Community Hospital in Supply, N.C. Born in Pittsfield on June 15, 1931, son of William Francis Powers Sr. and Gertrude Elizabeth Boyne Powers, he was a 1949 graduate of Lee High School, where he played football, basketball and baseball. He lived in West Islip, N.Y., before moving to Sunset Beach two years ago. A Marine Corps veteran, he served during the Korean War. Mr. Powers owned and operated Powers Electronics. Before that, he was employed as a salesman at Arrow Electronics and at Raytheon. He was a communicant of St. Brendan the Navigator Church in Shallotte, N.C. In his younger years, as a pitcher in the Spinc AA South Berkshire League, he threw a no-hitter. He was a member of Sand Piper Bay Golf Course in Sunset Beach, and in West Islip, of Port Jefferson (N.Y.) Country Club. He and his late brother, James Powers, also played in tournaments at Greenoch Country Club in Lee. He leaves his wife, the former Elizabeth Selig; a daughter, Elizabeth R. Powers of Montgomery, Ala.; three sons, William F. Powers III of Centerreach, N.Y., John B. Powers of Bayport, N.Y., and Mark T. Powers of Calabash, N.C.; a sister, Gertrude E. Hodgkins of Lenox, and six grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Mass of Resurrection for William Francis Powers Jr., who died Aug. 13, 2004, will be celebrated tomorrow, Aug. 17, at 9 at St. Brendan the Navigator Catholic Church in Shallotte, N.C. The family will receive friends today, Aug. 16, from 6 to 8 at BRUNSWICK FUNERAL SERVICE, Shallotte, with a prayer vigil at 7:30.
