Stephen Matranga

Stephen Matranga, 92, of 7 Robinson St. died Thursday evening at North Adams Commons. Born in Piana del Grece Albanese, Sicily, Italy, on Nov. 27, 1911, son of Angelo and Rosina Guidera Matranga, he came to North Adams at an early age and attended North Adams schools. Mr. Matranga was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 111th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron in the European Theater. He participated in the invasion of Normandy and also in campaigns in northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and central Europe. He was awarded medals for his service and was honorably discharged on Nov. 11, 1945. Mr. Matranga was last employed as a shoe cutter by the former Wall-Streeter Shoe Co. until his retirement. Before that, he worked at the former Arnold Print Works. Following his retirement, he worked part-time at the North Adams Elks Lodge. He was a communicant of St. Anthony's Church and a member of the Frank R. Stiles Post 125 American Legion, the Dr. George L. Curran Post 996 VFW and the North Adams Lodge of Elks 487. Mr. Matranga was well known for his wood-working and cabinet-making. He leaves three sisters, Jennie Matranga, Mary Matranga and Antonina St. Pierre, all of North Adams, with whom he made his home. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, at 9:15 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, CENTRAL CHAPELS, 74 Marshall St., North Adams. Funeral Mass at 10 at St. Anthony of Padua Church celebrated by the Rev. Albert Dagnoli. Burial in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are Monday from 4 to 7. Donations to the American Legion for veterans serving in the Middle East in care of the funeral home. Survivors include nieces and nephews, including Norman St. Pierre of Wrightsville Beach, N.C., Dennis St. Pierre of Adams, David St. Pierre of Southwick, Genevieve May of Queensbury, N.Y., and Annette Guerino of North Adams; and grandnieces and grandnephews; one great-grandniece and one great-grandnephew. Two brothers, Joseph and Vito Matranga, and one nephew, Paul St. Pierre, are deceased.
