Mary M. O'Brien

Mary M. O'Brien, 85, of State Line Road died Thursday morning at Laurel Lake Center for Health and Rehabilitation, where she had resided since Dec. 26, 2003. Born in Great Barrington on March 7, 1919, daughter of Garrett and Catherine Kiley McCarthy, she graduated from the former Williams High School in 1936 and from the former St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing. Mrs. O'Brien worked as a registered nurse at the former St. Luke's Hospital in Pittsfield for many years and at Austen Riggs Center in Stockbridge, retiring in 1979. She was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church and a member of its Rosary & Altar Sodality. She was active in the Richmond-West Stockbridge Community Health Association and in the senior citizens organization Greater Years. Her husband, James F. O'Brien, whom she married at St. Patrick's Church on April 22, 1946, died Dec. 6, 1998. She leaves three sons, Dennis J. O'Brien of Ambler, Pa., Thomas G. O'Brien of Drexel Hill, Pa. and Joseph R. O'Brien of Pueblo, Colo.; two daughters, Mary K. Stodden of Hancock and Joanne E. Flynn of Stockbridge; a sister, Catherine Daly of Natick; eight grandchildren, and a great-grandchild. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Mary M. O'Brien will be celebrated Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at 10 at St. Patrick's Church in West Stockbridge by the Rev. Daniel Papineau, MIC. Burial will follow in St. Patrick's Cemetery in West Stockbridge. The family will receive friends tomorrow, Sept. 19, from 3 to 6 at FINNERTY AND STEVENS FUNERAL HOME, 426 Main St., Great Barrington. She especially enjoyed being with her family and helping many in the community. She was predeceased by a brother, Joseph McCarthy. Donations in memory of Mary may be made to the James F. and Mary M. O'Brien Memorial Scholarship, set up for the benefit of a graduating senior at Monument Mountain Regional High School, through the funeral home.
