Alfons Michael Wiater Sr., 83, of 389 Harbor Road died yesterday morning at North Adams Regional Hospital. Born in Adams on July 4, 1921, son of Jakob and Katarzyna Kolis Wiater, he was a 1941 graduate of the former Adams High School. He earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Northeastern University in 1948. An Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, he served as a second lieutenant. He was stationed in Germany and in England. Mr. Wiater was employed for 33 years as a mechanical engineer in the ordnance and transformer departments of GE, retiring in 1983. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church and a grand knight of the Knights of Columbus in Adams. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and trapping, and was an avid fan of the Red Sox and Celtics. His wife, the former Elizabeth Madigan, whom he married Sept. 25, 1948, died Feb. 20, 1999. He leaves four sons, A. Michael Wiater Jr. of Slidell, La., Patrick J. Wiater of Voorheesville, N.Y., Gerard L. Wiater of Westboro and RIchard G. Wiater of Cheshire; four daughters, Mary W. Weigel of Greenfield, Alicia M. Meehan of Monte Sereno, Calif., Elizabeth M. Wiater of Watsonville, Calif., and Jane M. Wiater-Bakker of Littleton, Colo.; two sisters, Cecelia Bissaillon and Theresa Lepine, both of Cheshire, and 12 grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Alfons Michael Wiater Sr., who died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, will be Saturday, Oct. 9, at 8:15 from DERY-CHESHIRE FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 9 at St. Mary of the Assumption Church by the Rev. David A. Raymond, pastor. Burial will follow in Cheshire Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Adult Day Health Center of North Adams in care of the funeral home's main office, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
