Sydney G. Ornstil

Sydney G. Ornstil, 80, of Hillsdale Road died Sunday afternoon at Baystate Medical Center. He served on the Board of Assessors for the town of Egremont from 1996 until this past spring. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Sept. 4, 1924, son of Harry and Esther Lang Ornstil, he attended schools there and was a graduate of City College of New York. An Army veteran of World War II, he served from 1943 to 1946 as a technician 5th grade with the 68th General Division. He was awarded two ribbons, one with a Bronze star. Mr. Ornstil was a security trader in New York and California. A part-time resident of South Egremont since 1967, he made it his permanent home in 1986. He and his wife, the former Dorothy Braver, were married in 1952 in New York. Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, David Ornstil of South Egremont, Michael Ornstil of Oakland, Calif., and Jonathan Ornstil of San Francisco; two daughters, Wendy Butzen of Chicago and Robin Bussin of Kentfield, Calif., and 13 grandchildren.
