James Patrick "Ike" Mullany

James Patrick "Ike" Mullany, 89, of 19 Knob Hill Road and Ocala, Fla., died Tuesday at Fairview Hospital. Born in Great Barrington on Aug. 24, 1915, son of George and Margaret D'Arcy Mullany, he was a 1932 graduate of the former Searles High School. He graduated from Bay Path Institute in Springfield in 1935 with a degree in accounting. During World War II, he was a member of the state Guard at Camp Chase in Massachusetts. Mr. Mullany had been employed by Smith Paper Co. in Lee as a cost accountant. He retired from Kim-berly Clark in 1977 after 38 years of service. He first worked in Springfield for four years. He was a communicant of St. Peter's Church. He was a member of the Great Barrington Fire Department for more than 55 years, retiring in 1996 as town fire inspector. In 1962 he served as president of the Hope Fire Co. Muster Team. In July during the parade honoring the 150th anniversary of the Hope Fire Co., he was recognized and honored as the oldest living member of the department. He was also a retired member of the Berkshire County Fire Wardens and the Fire Prevention Association of Massachusetts. Mr. Mullaney served as vice president of the Western Massachusetts Muscular Dystrophy Association. He was active in the National Association of Cost Accountants and enjoyed hunting, fishing and attending the Ocala Yearling Auctions. His first wife, the former Anne Levenez, died Jan. 13, 1984. They had owned and operated the Wayside Inn in Great Barrington for many years. He and his wife, the former Florence Reynolds, were married Oct. 27, 1988 in Ocala. Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, James Mullany Jr. of Tabernacle, N.J., Peter Mullany of Latham, N.Y., and John Mullany of Great Barrington; two daughters, Anne Mullany of Harvard and Jean Davidson of Lee; two stepsons, George Reynolds of Otis and Michael Reynolds of Naugatuck, Conn.; two stepdaughters, Ann Belknap of Pittsfield and Catherine Gray of Ashaway, R.I.; a brother, Dr. George Mullany of Great Barrington; a sister, Anne Dalone of Canaan, Conn., 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for James "Ike" Mullany, who died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, will be Saturday, Oct. 16, at 9:30 at the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 at St. Peter's Church with the Rev. Shaun O'Connor, M.I.C., officiating. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Friday, Oct. 15, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in "Ike's" memory may be made to the Hope Fire Co. of Great Barrington or to the St. Peter's Ramp Fund, c/o the funeral home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
