Grace Marie Canale, 86
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Grace Marie Canale, 86, formerly of 484 Walnut St., died Tuesday morning, Nov. 16, 2004, at Sweet Brook Care Centers in Williamstown, where she had resided since 1999.
Born in Ahmeek, Mich., on Oct. 18, 1918, daughter of Orazio Allegra and Francesca Ventura Allegra Mattucci, she was a graduate of St. John's School in Albany, N.Y.
Primarily a homemaker, Mrs. Canale had been employed as an inspector with the former General Cable Corp. in Pownal, Vt.
She was a longtime communicant of St. Anthony's Church, and made novenas. She was a volunteer Brownie and Girl Scout leader at the former Sarah T. Haskins School.
She was a member of the former Moose Lodge and a former member of TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly). She enjoyed doing cross stitch. She was accomplished at decorating wedding cakes and was known for her Palmer Method penmanship.
She was a kind, gentle, fun person who provided great cooking, hospitality and nurturing to everyone. The love she gave lives on.
Her husband, Joseph Louis Canale, whom she married Feb. 3, 1946, in St. Anthony's Church in Albany, died May 3, 1968.
She leaves a daughter, Barbara Canale-Schmidt and her husband, Karl A. "Butch" Schmidt, of North Adams; a sister, Minnie Marta of Rodeo, Calif., and a brother, Paul Allegra of North Adams.
She was predeceased by her longtime companion Robert McClelland, brother Dominic Allegra, sisters Mary "Marie" Spinosa Connors, Frances Allegra and Marie Allegra.
FUNERAL NOTICE — Services for Mrs. Canale will take place Saturday, Nov. 20, at 9:15 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall Ave., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 at St. Anthony of Padua Church by the Rev. Daniel J. O'Hear, pastor. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Friday, Nov. 19, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested for the Sweet Brook Activities Fund for the Baxter Unit through the funeral home.
