Cecil Bartholomew

Cecil Bartholomew, 91, of South Under Mountain Road, died yesterday morning at home. She was a member of the Sheffield School Committee before it became regionalized. Born in New York City on Sept. 4, 1913, daughter of Arthur R. and Cora Brown Adams, she was educated in New York City schools and attended Denison University in Ohio. She moved to Sheffield in 1930. Mrs. Bartholomew owned and operated a dairy farm in Sheffield with her late husband, Edward "Ned" Bartholomew, from 1935 to 1972. She also established and operated a dairy bar in Sheffield from the late 1930s until World War II. She owned and operated the Sheffield Market from the early 1950s to 1972, and, from the late 1970s to the late 1990s, was a real estate broker for Paradise Realty in the state of Florida. During World War II, she volunteered with the American Red Cross and manned the air raid observation tower. She was a member of First Church of Christ Scientist in Venice, Fla. She was a census taker in the 1950 federal project and enjoyed community gatherings, parties, ballroom dancing and traveling worldwide. Her husband, whom she married Feb. 3, 1935, in Lime Rock, Conn., died June 25, 1980. She leaves a daughter, Pamela Armstrong of Greenwich, Conn.; a son, Dana Bartholomew of Sheffield; four grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Mrs. Cecil Adams Bartholomew of Sheffield will be Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at 11 at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME, 426 Main St., Great Barrington. Burial will follow in Sheffield Center Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, from 5 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sheffield Tree Project, P.O. Box 72, Sheffield, MA 01257. Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Beth; son-in-law, Richard; four grandchildren, Laura Bartholomew Guzzi, Dana "Bart" Bartholomew, Matthew Armstrong and Roderick Armstong.
