Thomas J. "Joe" Caffrey Sr

Thomas J. "Joe" Caffrey Sr., 84, of 7 Harding Ave. died yesterday at Williamstown Commons, where he had resided since Dec. 13. Born in Ludlow on Aug. 26, 1920, son of Thomas and Hazel Ouellette Caffrey, he attended Springfield schools and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1938. He moved to Adams in 1977. A World War II Navy veteran, he served from December 1942 to December 1945 with the amphibious branch, landing on the Normandy beachhead, and on the LST 240 as a quartermaster, first class. Mr. Caffrey had a long career in sales. He worked at Steiger's in Springfield, at the Massachusetts Wholesale Drug conglomerate, at Filene's in the Berkshire Mall in Lanesboro and, most recently, at Wal-Mart in Pittsfield, from which he retired last year. He was a member of Post 160 American Legion, VFW Post 996 in North Adams and the Greylock Bowling Club in North Adams. He and his wife, the former Elinor M. Lawson, were married Oct. 6, 1977, in St. Thomas' Church. Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Marie Van Acker of Valatie, N.Y.; five sisters, Pat Wells of Ferndale, Minn., Mary Chapman of Amesbury, Lorretta Cifu of New York, Eileen O'Connell of Woodside, N.Y., and Cathy Rooney of Maryland; a grandson, and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by two sons, James Caffrey and Thomas J. Caffrey Jr. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Mr. Thomas J. "Joe" Caffrey, who died Dec. 19, 2004, will be Wednesday, Dec. 22, at 11 from MCBRIDE FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at noon at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Adams. Calling hours at the funeral home will be tomorrow, Dec. 21, from 4 to 7. Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery. The family suggests memorial donations to St. Thomas Aquinas Church or to the VNA & Hospice of Northern Berkshire, both in care of the funeral home. Survivors include his sister-in-law, Claire L. Juif of Adams.
