Ruth Shapiro

Ruth Shapiro, 79, of 6444 Pumpkin Seed Circle, Boca Raton, Fla., a former resident of 142 Marion Ave., died yesterday at North Adams Regional Hospital after a long battle with cancer. Born in Boston on July 22, 1925, daughter of Irving and Anna Werksman Myers, the family resided in Port Chester, N.Y., where she was educated. She also completed secretarial school and was employed as a legal secretary until her marriage in 1945, when she moved to North Adams. She had lived in Florida for 20 years. Mrs. Shapiro was a longtime member of Congregation Beth Israel and its Sisterhood in North Adams. She also spent many years working for Hadassah at the local, regional and national levels, and traveled several times to Israel for Hadassah. She was a past president of the North Adams Hadassah and the Western New England Region Hadassah. An avid golfer, she was a longtime member of the Taconic Golf Club of Williamstown. She scored a hole-in-one twice, the first time in Williamstown and the second in Boca Raton. She also volunteered for many years at the Women's Exchange of Williamstown, and was a longtime reader for the Recording for the Blind. Her husband, Sterling B. "Sonny" Shapiro, whom she married Sept. 19, 1945, died Jan. 19, 2004. She leaves two daughters, Marilyn Darack of Wayland and Jane Miller of Williamstown; a son, Alan H. Shapiro of Santa Fe, N.M.; a brother, Fischel Myers of N.J., seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Ruth Shapiro will take place Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004, at 2 at Congregation Beth Israel, Lois Street, North Adams, with Rabbi Jeffrey Goldwasser officiating. Burial will follow in Beth Israel Cemetery, Clarksburg. There will be no calling hours. The omission of flowers is requested. Any memorial donations are suggested for Hadassah or Congregation Beth Israel through the FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME for FUNERALS, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, MA 01247, which is in charge of arrangements. Memorial week will take place Thursday evening, Dec. 30, 2004, and Saturday evening, Jan. 1, 2005, at the home of Jane Miller and Dr. Robert Miller, 356 Oblong Road, Williamstown. Survivors include sons-in-law John Darack and Dr. Robert Miller; daughter-in-law Anou Mirkine; sisters-in-law Dorothy Myers and Shirley Less; grandchildren Dr. Jeremi Carswell, Dr. Brett Carswell, Jesse Shapiro, Jacob Shapiro, Sarah Miller, Elizabeth Miller, Marion Mulgrew, James Mulgrew, Adam Darack and Ruth Darack, and great-grandchildren Oliver Carswell, Arielle Mulgrew, T.J. Mulgrew, Noah Mulgrew and Mateo Darack.
