George R. Bower Jr.

George R. Bower Jr., 89, formerly of Great Barrington, died yesterday at Woodbriar of Wilmington skilled nursing center, where he had resided for three months. Born in Holyoke on Aug. 7, 1915, son of George R. Bower Sr. and Frances Stebbins Bower, he was educated there, and completed a yearlong program at the former Rising Paper Co. He also had resided in Hillsdale, N.Y., and for 17 years in Largo, Fla. An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the European theater, including with the 92nd Chemical Composite Company in North Africa, and attained the rank of sergeant. Mr. Bower had been employed as a chemical technician at Rising Paper, retiring after 43 years of service. He was an avid golfer. His first wife, the former Antoinette Metallo, is deceased. His wife, the former Alberta Beck, is deceased. He leaves two daughters, Patricia Rooney of Billerica and Janet Rose of Tewksbury; a stepson, Frederick Dimmick of Hillsdale; two sisters, Marjorie Black and Shirley Crompton, both of Largo, and four grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Calling hours for George R. Bower Jr., who died Dec. 28, 2004, will be Thursday from 4 to 8 at SWEENEY MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 66 Concord Road, Billerica. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701. Service and burial will be in the spring in Greenlawn Cemetery, Great Barrington. He leaves his sons-in-law, Gregory Rooney and Kevin Rose, and four grandchildren, Jennifer and Rebecca Rooney and Kaitlin and Nicholas Rose.
