Judge Harvey Sam Halberstadter

Judge Harvey Sam Halberstadter, 68, of Camp Half Moon Road, died Friday evening at home. Born in Elizabeth, N.J., on Feb. 18, 1936, son of Rabbi Theodore B. Halberstadter and Molly Goldberg Halberstadter, he graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School. He attended Duke University in North Carolina and the Sorbonne in Paris, where he earned his master's degree in phonetics and French. He also graduated from Rutgers Law School and practiced law in New Jersey. He had summered in Monterey until making it his permanent home in 1992. Mr. Halberstadter was a civil assignment judge in New Jersey at the Union County Superior Court until his retirement. He and his wife, the former Rosalyn Siegel, were married June 20, 1963, in New Jersey. He was a member of the Elmora Hebrew Center in Elizabeth and, later, of Hevreh of South Berkshire in Great Barrington. Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Jill Studley of Rockville, Md. Another daughter, Amy Halberstadter, died June 30, 2004. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for the Honorable Harvey S. Halberstadter, former civil assignment judge of Union County Superior Court who died Dec. 31, 2004, will be conducted tomorrow, Jan. 3, at 1 at HIGGINS AND BONNER-ECHO LAKE FUNERAL HOME in Westfield, N.J., by Rabbi Samuel Rosenberg, spiritual leader of Elmora Hebrew Center. Burial will follow in Mount Lebanon Cemetery, Iselin, N.J. There will be no local service. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Rosalyn, along with their daughter, Jill Studley, and her husband, David, of Rockville, Md. He also leaves his daughter Amy's fiancé, Andy Cote of Sheffield. Amy Halberstadter died June 30, 2004. Contributions in his memory may be made to either HospiceCare in the Berkshires, Hevreh of South Berkshire or the Berkshire Visiting Nurse Association. FINNERTY AND STEVENS FUNERAL HOME of Great Barrington is in charge of local arrangements.
