Clara L. Johnson Maynard

Clara L. Johnson Maynard, 87, a longtime resident of Hancock Road, died Tuesday evening at the Williamstown Commons following a long illness. Born in New Ashford on May 14, 1917, daughter of Asa Samuel and Ellen Laura White Packard, she attended schools there. She lived at Mount Hope Farm and worked as a housekeeper. She later moved to Steele's Corners in South Williamstown, where she worked for private families. Her first husband, Carl Johnson, whom she married May 14, 1935, in Petersburgh, N.Y., died July 31, 1975. Her husband, Spencer Bryant Maynard, whom she married Dec. 8, 1980, in Stephentown, N.Y., died May 23, 1983. She enjoyed gardening, quilting and embroidering. She leaves three sons, Charles Johnson of Williamstown, Arthur Johnson of New Ashford and Mark Johnson of Dalton; three daughters, Audrey J. Fagan of Spring Hill, Fla., Arlene J. Wood of Stephentown and Olive J. DiGennaro of North Adams; a sister, Ethel H. Raney of North Bennington, Vt., several grandchildren and great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Eugene Johnson. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Clara Maynard, who died Jan. 4, 2005, will be private and held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Interment will take place in the spring in the New Ashford Cemetery. Memorials in her honor may be made to the St. Rafael's Food Pantry and/or the Second Congregational Church through the GEORGE M. HOPKINS FUNERAL HOME, 61-67 Spring St., Williamstown, MA 01267. She was predeceased by five brothers, Herbert Packard, Clifford Packard, Roland Packard, Garold Packard and Ernest Packard, and a sister, Marion Suydam.
