Clayton Howard Gardner II

Clayton Howard Gardner II, 88, formerly of Berlin, N.Y., died Monday at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington, where he had resided since 1997. He was the father of Kelly S. Gardner and the stepfather of Rebecca Tattersall, both of Adams. Born in Troy, N.Y., on Oct. 20, 1916, son of Clayton H. and Nellie Ward Gardner, he attended Berlin schools. An Army veteran of World War II, he served with Service Company, 17th Tank Battalion, and was awarded a Bronze Star Medal with valor distinction. He was discharged as a technician, fourth class. A member of Teamsters Local 294, Mr. Gardner was employed by Petricca Construction, Fiske Lumber, Rifenburg Construction and Callahan Industries, from where he retired in 1981. He was a member of the Berlin Senior Citizens, and of the Taconic Valley American Legion Post 937 for 46 years. His wife, the former Alfreda M. Hammersmith, whom he married Dec. 20, 1946, died Sept. 22, 1986. Besides his daughter and stepdaughter, he leaves another daughter, Joyce Hespelein of Berlin; a son, Clayton H. Gardner III of Berlin; two sisters, Marion Goodermote of Berlin and Grace Karwiel of Watervliet; two brothers, Francis Gardner of Ghent, N.Y., and Allyn Gardner of Punta Gorda, Fla., five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Clayton Howard Gardner II, who died Jan. 10, 2005, will be conducted Friday at noon at the Vermont Veterans Home chapel by the Rev. John Foster. Burial with military honors will follow in Berlin (N.Y.) Baptist Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to THOMAS M. BARBER FUNERAL HOME, 66 Armsby Road, Petersburgh on Thursday from 4 to 7 and to the Vermont Veterans Home on Friday from 11 until the start of the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Vermont Veterans Home Activity Fund in care of the funeral home.
