Paul R. Johann

Paul R. Johann, 76, of East Shore Drive, Niverville, N.Y., formerly of Sherwood Drive, died yesterday at his home. He was the first principal of Taconic High School, from 1969 until 1973. The school's gym was dedicated to him at the request of the students and a plaque was installed there in his honor. Born in Albany, N.Y., in 1928, son of Raymond J. and Gertrude Murphy Johann, he attended North Chatham School, the Albany Public Schools, and graduated from Christian Brothers Academy in Albany. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1952 from Siena College and his master's degree in education in 1956 from the State University of New York at Albany. He served in the Army in France after college. Mr. Johann was a teacher and school administrator in Massachusetts, and in Dutchess and Albany counties in New York, including at Ichabod Crane Central High School in Valatie, and as principal of Webutuck Central High School in Amenia and of Saratoga Springs Junior High School. He retired from New York state service in 1990 as state agency administrator with the Albany Division of Substance Abuse Services. He had been president of the Berkshire County Principals Association and the Ichabod Crane Central School District Teachers' Association, a director of Massachusetts School Administrators and a member of Phi Delta Kappa fraternity, the New York State Teachers Association and the American Association of School Administrators. Mr. Johann also was a member of the Lions Club and the Kinderhook (N.Y.) Lake Corp., a docent at the Albany Institute of History and Art, a newsreader on RISE Radio (WMHT) and a trustee and president of the Valatie Free Library. He was a charter member of Winding Brook Country Club in Valatie and was co-cubmaster of Pack 117 and committee chairman of Boy Scout Troop 113. He also was a committeeman for the town of Chatham (N.Y.) Democratic Committee. He leaves his wife, the former Sylvia Katz, and a son, Daniel Johann of Niverville. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Paul R. Johann, who died Jan. 19, 2005, will be conducted Friday at 11 from RAYMOND E. BOND FUNERAL HOME, Route 9, Valatie, by Rabbi Daniel Fried. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Paul's name to the Valatie Free Library or to the CBA Scholarship Program, in care of Christian Brothers Academy, 12 Airline Drive, Albany, NY 12205. He also leaves his mother-in-law, Rose Katz; a brother, Sanford Mortan and his wife, Mildred, and several cousins.
