Mary Harrigan

Mary Harrigan, 81, of 24 Silver St., died Thursday at home. Born in Great Barrington on Oct. 3, 1923, daughter of Emilio and Emilia Zanzi Palfini, she graduated from the former New Marlboro High School in Mill River and also graduated from the former Berkshire Business College. Mrs. Harrigan was employed by the Berkshire Community Action Council in the South County office since 1976 and was the area director since 1988. In August 2001, she received the 25-year service award. She was previously employed at the National Mahaiwe Bank. She was a communicant of St. Peter's Church and, in November 2001, received the Citizen of the Year Award from the town of Great Barrington. She was also the coordinator of "A Taste of the Berkshires" and chairman of the local Red Cross Blood drive. She was on the board of directors of the Watson Christmas Fund, a board member of FEMA, emergency service coordinator of the Great Barrington Salvation Army and a member of the advisory committee of Construct Inc. She also founded Your Community Shop on Castle Street, which benefits many needy local families. She enjoyed reading, listening to country and western music and traveling with her family. Her husband, Edward "Ted" Harrigan, died July 1973. She leaves two sons, Timothy J. Harrigan of Great Barrington and Michael E. Harrigan of Egremont; eight grandchildren and a great-grandchild. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for Mary Palfini Harrigan, who died Thursday, Feb. 3, will be Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at 8 a.m. at the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 at St. Peter's Church with the Rev. Shaun O'Connor, MIC officiating. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery. Family will receive friends Tuesday, Feb. 8 from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy in Mary's memory may be made to the Berkshire Community Action Council in care of the funeral home, 33 South St., Great Barrington 01230.
