James Sidney "Jay" Simmons

James Sidney "Jay" Simmons, 84, of 720 Greylock St. died yesterday morning at Providence Care Center in Lenox. Born in Lee on June 25, 1920, he was the son of George and Martha Moxon Simmons, and the stepson of Louise Simmons, who raised him from a young age after the death of his mother. He was a 1939 graduate of Lee High School, where he was a pitcher for the baseball team. Mr. Simmons was employed for 40 years by Smith Paper Co. and its successor, Kimberly-Clark Corp., retiring in 1982 from the Columbia Mill. He had first worked for a short time at the Monument Mountain Mill. He was an avid gardener. His wife, the former Justine Merwin, whom he married June 9, 1940, died Jan. 15, 2004. He leaves a son, Jeffrey J. Simmons of Lee; four daughters, Martha A. Peryon of Stockbridge, Deborah L Beligni of Housatonic and J. Suzanne Broderick and Bonnie J. Simmons, both of Lee; a brother, Frederick Simmons of Lee, 11 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. Another son, James Simmons, died in 1985. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for James S. "Jay" Simmons, who died Feb. 7, 2005, will be Thursday at 10 at KELLY FUNERAL HOME in Lee, with the Rev. Bert W. Marshall, pastor of First Congregational Church in Lee, officiating. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Wednesday from 5 to 7 at the funeral home. Friends wishing may make donations to the Alzheimer's Association in care of the funeral home. He enjoyed being with his family and all of his grandchildren.
