Mary Louise Crews

Mary Louise Crews, 98, of 54 Kemp Ave. died yesterday at home. Born in North Adams on June 20, 1906, daughter of John and Agnes Black Smith Crews, she graduated from Drury High School. She received her teaching degree from the former North Adams Normal School, now Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. Miss Crews taught in the city's elementary schools for many years, including first and third grades at the former Houghton School and second grade at Brayton School. She retired in June 1968 as a first-grade teacher at the former East School, now Sullivan Elementary School. She first taught in elementary schools in Buskirk and Shushan, N.Y. She was a member of First Congregational Church and its Choral Club. She also was a member of the Monday Club, the Massachusetts Retired Teachers Association and the Retired State, County and Municipal Employees Association of Massachusetts. She leaves her friends and caregivers, Leonard and Yvonne Benoit of North Adams, with whom she made her home. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A private funeral for family and friends to celebrate the life of Miss Mary Louise Crews, who died Feb. 16, 2005, will be Friday at 2 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery, North Adams. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Friday from 1 to 2. Memorial donations are suggested for the children's department at the North Adams Public Library through the funeral home. Survivors include all the members of the late Henry and Nellie Bryant Benoit family: Leonard and Yvonne Benoit, with whom she made her home, Nancy Benoit, Mary Bryant, Charlene Chesbro, David Benoit and Jeffrey Benoit. She was predeceased by Wayne Benoit and Kirk Benoit.
