Reginald H. Race

Reginald H. Race, 76, of 89 Alford Road died yesterday at home after a long illness. Born in Egremont on May 16, 1928, son of Clarence S. and Jeanette Snow Race, he attended schools there and the former Dewey Elementary and Searles High schools. A Navy veteran of World War II, he served on the USS Monterey from 1945 to 1947. Mr. Race was employed as a truck driver by Palmer Lines and Kimball Motors, until leaving in 1978 because of illness. He also had been a lieutenant in uniform division of the Berkshire County sheriff's department. He was a member of the Berkshire County Deputy Sheriffs' Association since 1964. He also was a special police officer for Great Barrington and Mount Washington, a life member and vice commander of James A. Modolo Post 8348 VFW, and a member of American Legion Post 340 in Sheffield. He served on the town's wage and compensation, civil defense, town manager study and traffic study committees. He enjoyed traveling by car throughout the United States and Canada, hunting and watching sports on television. He and his wife the former Doris Rossi, were married Oct. 20, 1951, in St. Peter's Church. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Michael Race of Great Barrington. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The military funeral for Reginald H. Race who died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2005, will be Saturday, Feb. 19, at 11:30 at BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery. The family will receive friends tomorrow, Feb. 18, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy in Reginald's memory may be made to HospiceCare of the Berkshires or the pulmonary unit of Fairview Hospital in care of the funeral home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. Mr. Race was predeceased by a brother, C. Dudley Race of South Egremont. He also leaves several nieces and nephews.
