James DeWitt Duprey Sr.

James DeWitt Duprey Sr., 84, of 60 Maple St. died yesterday morning at home. Born in Harriman, Tenn., on Jan. 10, 1921, son of Louis and Minnie May Morgan Duprey, he moved to Middlefield and then to Adams as a child and attended Renfrew and Plunkett schools and the former Adams High School. He also resided in Tampa, Fla., before returning to Adams in 1989. He had lived at 2 Cross St. and at 4 Columbia St. before moving to Maple Street. An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the 104th Infantry Division, where he saw action on the European front in France and Germany. He was honorably discharged with the rank of technical sergeant in 1945. After moving back to Middlefield, Mr. Duprey worked for contractors for 24 years. He then worked for Holiday Inn Corp. in Tampa, retiring in 1986. At an early age, he was employed by Sears, Roebuck & Co. and in Mill 3 of the former Berkshire Fine Spinning Associates. He and his wife, the former A. Dorothy Guild, were married Jan. 12, 1946, in Adams. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, James D. Duprey Jr. of Bennington, Vt.; two daughters, Cheryl Ann Wagner of Williamstown and Barbara Jean Duprey of Adams; a brother, Richard R. Duprey of North Adams; 12 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- James DeWitt Duprey Sr., 84, died March 6, 2005. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no formal funeral. MCBRIDE FUNERAL SERVICE of Adams is in charge of arrangements. He also leaves several nieces and nephews. His sister, Edith Pelletier, passed on in 2004.
