Linda T. Gates

Linda T. Gates, 56, of 30 Depot St. died Saturday morning at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston after a short illness. Born in Kingston, N.Y., on Nov. 3, 1948, daughter of Paul and Jean Stanley Thomas, she graduated from Lansingburgh High School in Troy, N.Y., from St. Catherine's Nursing School in Albany, N.Y., and from Berkshire Community College. Mrs. Gates was employed by Berkshire County Head Start for 27 years. She started as a bus monitor and, at the time of her death, was a family advocate. She was a member of the Bas Ridge Country Club in Hinsdale and the Cheshire Recreation Committee, a cheerleading coach and a volunteer at Cheshire Elementary School. She enjoyed playing pitch and games, and doing puzzles. She and her husband, George A. Gates, were married in 1971 at St. Charles' Church in Pittsfield. Besides her husband, she leaves a son, Michael Gates of Naugatuck, Conn.; three daughters, Melissa Gates of Cheshire and Marcia Gates and Mary Gates-McKee, both of Pittsfield; four brothers, John Thomas and Martin Thomas, both of Pittstown, N.Y., Charles Thomas of Saratoga, N.Y., and Jaime Thomas of Speigletown, N.Y.; six sisters, Mary Defreest of Stephentown, N.Y., Jean Welsh of Freehold, N.Y., Katie Davis of Melrose, N.Y., Nancy Thomas-Kiernan of Stuyvesant, N.Y., and Sara Martin and Tammy Guynup, both of Schaghticoke, N.Y., and five grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Mrs. Linda T. Gates died in Boston on Saturday, March 5, 2005. Services will be held Wednesday, March 9, at 10 at DWYER FUNERAL HOME, Pittsfield. Burial will be in Cheshire Cemetery in the spring. Calling hours at the funeral home will be tomorrow, March 8, from 4 to 7. Linda was very dedicated to her husband, children, family, grandchildren and friends. She also was dedicated to her extended family at Head Start. She was a loving grandmother to Chantal Gates, Acacia Alston, Serena McKee, and Sophia and Liam McKee. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Berkshire County Child Development Program in care of the funeral home. She was predeceased by a brother, Robert Thomas.
