Anostocios Kiriakedes

Anostocios Kiriakedes, 79, who was also known as Andy Kydes, of 574 Polikoff Road, Ashley Falls, died Thursday at Bay Pine Veterans Medical Center in St. Petersburg, Fla. He owned and operated Eagle Shoe Repair on Main Street, Great Barrington, from 1952 until retiring in the early 1990s. Born in Kozani, Greece, on Feb. 6, 1926, son of Paresa Kiriakedes and the late Michael Kiriakedes, he immigrated from Saloninka, Greece, in 1939 to join his family in Great Barrington, where he attended the former Searles High School. A Navy veteran of World War II, he enlisted after high school. Upon the start of the Korean War, he re-enlisted, this time in the Army. After his discharge, Mr. Kiriakedes established his cobbler and shoemaking business. In the early 1990s, he turned the business over to his son, Michael Kiriakedes. He was a life member of James A. Modolo VFW Post in Great Barrington and a baseball and horseracing fan. He and his wife, the former Elizabeth "Betsy" Gifford, were married June 25, 1989, in St. George's Greek Orthodox Church in Pittsfield. Besides his wife and mother, of Norwalk, Conn., and his son, of Sheffield, he leaves two daughters, Deborah Anne Kuboyama of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Terry Marsh of DuBois, Pa.; two sisters, Despina Rouglou of Norwalk and Ann Kanas of Canaan, Conn.; a brother, Chris Kydes of Wilton, Conn.; two stepdaughters, Lorraine Moore of Sumter, S.C., and Kimberly Boyd of Atlanta; five grandchildren, and seven stepgrandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Mr. Anostocios "Andy Kydes" Kiriakedes will be conducted Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at 6 p.m. at BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. John Kostas of St. George's Greek Orthodox Church of Pittsfield. Burial will be later in the spring. The family will receive friends tomorrow, March 8, from 4 until the time of the funeral. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Andy may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. He also leaves a daughter-in-law, Barbara Kiriakedes; two sons-in-law, Shin Kuboyama and Robert Marsh, and five grandchildren, Andrew and Karina Kiriakedes, and Garrett, Deana and Michael Marsh.
