George E. Sauer

George E. Sauer, 88, of Interlaken Crossroad died Sunday morning at Kimball Farms Nursing Care Center in Lenox. Born in Dayton, Ohio, on Jan. 20, 1917, son of Charles E. and Adeline Turner Sauer, he was a 1935 graduate of Troy (Ohio) High School. He earned a bachelor of science degree from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio. An electrical engineer, Mr. Sauer had been employed by GE in Pittsfield in the power transformer department for more than 40 years, retiring in 1981. He held several patents on transformer windings. In his later years, he did some consulting work for Gulf Oil Co. He was a member of the National Ski Patrol and was on the ski patrol at Butternut Basin ski area. He was a member of the GE Elfun Society and the American Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He was an officer of the Stockbridge Land Trust and of the Laurel Hill Association, and was a former president of Old Curtisville Inc. He volunteered at Arrowhead in Pittsfield, Berkshire Community College, Berkshire Botanical Garden, Hancock Shaker Village and Tanglewood. He and his wife, the former Elodie Sherman, were married Oct. 26, 1946, in Pittsfield. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, John E. Sauer of Lenox; two daughters, Rebecca Hurwitz of Amherst and Martha Sauer of Stockbridge; two sisters, Barbara Weaver of Eutawville, S.C., and Nancy Elifritz of Lake Leelanau, Mich., and three grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- George E. Sauer, 88, died March 13, 2005. In accordance with Mr. Sauer's wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral service. Private burial will take place in Stockbridge Town Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Antioch College or to Hancock Shaker Village in care of ROCHE FUNERAL HOME, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240. Mr. Sauer also is survived by his beloved grandchildren, Benjamin John Hurwitz, Jennifer Elizabeth Hurwitz and Katherine Suzanne Hurwitz, all of Amherst.
