Marianne Lipsky

Marianne Lipsky, 80, died Wednesday at Fairview Hospital in Great Barrington. Born in Sweden on July 2, 1924, daughter of Gunnar and Inga Sandstrom, she graduated from The Fashion School of Design in Stockholm. Mrs. Lipsky was a clothing designer for Sears Roebuck and Co. and other companies before moving to the Berkshires in 1971. She established the J. Jill catalog of clothing made of all-natural fabrics for Jenifer House, a retail complex in Great Barrington formerly owned by her husband Karl. Following the sale of the business, she turned her creative energies to the design of gardens, establishing MSL Natural Designs in 1989. She was one of the designers of Lilac Park in Lenox and the gardens at Tanglewood. She also organized the Scranak Supper Club at Tanglewood with Jane Ryan. She was a member of the Berkshire Botanical Gardens Horticultural Committee and The Lenox Garden Club. She was also an organizer for parties at Miss Hall's School for the Boston Symphony Orchestra fellowship students. She and her husband, Karl Lipsky, were married Jan. 29, 1971, in New Marlboro. Besides her husband, she leaves a son, Earl Goldring of Bokielia, Fla.; two stepsons, Seth Lipsky of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Jed Lipsky of Stowe, Vt.; a stepdaughter, Kill Lipsky-Fuore of New Marlboro; two brothers, Jon Sandstrom and Sven Sandstrom, both of Sweden, and nine grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The family of Marianne Sandstrom Lipsky will receive friends at home in New Marlboro on Saturday from 11 to 5 and Sunday from 10 to 4. Donations in Marianne's memory may be made to The Lenox Garden Club or The Berkshire Botanical Gardens through the FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. She leaves nine grandchildren, Henry and Jennifer Fuore and Lincoln, Karl, Thomas, Eli, Theodore, Flora and Helen Lipsky, daughters-in-law, Annika Lipsky and Amity Shales, and son-in-law, Joe Fuore.
