Robert F. Cheney Sr.

Robert F. Cheney Sr., 84, of Pine Street, South Lee, died Friday evening at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Lee on Dec. 27, 1920, son of Leslie and Myrtle Webb Cheney, he was a 1939 graduate of Lee High School. An Air Force veteran of World War II, he served with the 8th Air Force Division, the 100th Bomb Group and the 418 Bomb Squadron. An airplane engine mechanic, he worked on 747-D planes. He re-enlisted after the war and was discharged Jan. 1, 1952, as a staff sergeant. Mr. Cheney was employed by Hurlbut Paper Co. for 32 years as a winder. He retired in 1982. He was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd and served as its treasurer and warden for many years. He was a poet and a stamp collector, and enjoyed woodworking. He and his wife, the former Doreen Kelly, were married Aug. 19, 1944, in London. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Robert F. Cheney Jr. of South Lee; a daughter, Faith Aunio of South Lee; a sister, Berna Passetto of Lee; three grandchildren, and a great-grandchild. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Robert F. Cheney Sr., 84, of South Lee will be conducted Wednesday, April 6, 2005, at 10 at the Church of the Good Shepherd by the Rev. Stanley M. Woolley, rector. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery. Friends wishing may make donations in his memory to the Church of the Good Shepherd in care of KELLY FUNERAL HOME, 3 Main St., Lee, MA 01238.
