Irving Wolfe

Irving Wolfe, 86, of 22 Meleca Ave. died yesterday at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Pittsfield on Aug. 6, 1914, son of Morris and Rebecca Taichkofsky Wolfe, he attended local schools and was a 1933 graduate of Pittsfield High School. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts in 1981. He served in the Army from 1938 to 1941 and from 1942 until 1946, serving in the infantry. He received the Purple Heart. Mr. Wolfe was employed as a postal carrier for more than 30 years at the Pittsfield post office, retiring in 1972. He then taught at West Side Community School, now Conte Community School, until 1983. He was a member of Congregation Knesset Israel and the Ahavath Sholem and the B'nai B'rith. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans. He was a past officer of the Jewish War Veterans and a volunteer for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. His first wife, the former Dorothy Halperin, died June 16, 1985. He leaves his wife, the former Gertrude Karpen Leserowitz, whom he married Jan. 12, 1986; a stepson, Fred Leserowitz of Brooklyn, N.Y., and two brothers, Edward Wolfe of Roswell, Ga., and Harry Wolfe of Holyoke. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 9 a.m. at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, followed by burial at Knesset Israel Cemetery, Peck's Road, Pittsfield. The family will receive friends at the family home, 22 Meleca Ave., from 1 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Memorial donations in his memory may be made to the charity of one's choice in care of the funeral home.
