Eleanor Sack

Eleanor Sack, 89, of Oakwood Condominiums died yesterday at Fairview Hospital in Great Barrington. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on March 12, 1916, daughter of Jules and Bess Wilinsky Reiner, she graduated as class speaker from Richmond Hills High School in Queens, N.Y. She earned her degree in business from Packer College. She moved to the Berkshires in 1992, residing at times in Great Barrington and in West Stockbridge. A homemaker, Mrs. Sack volunteered for many organizations. She was president of the local chapter of the League of Women Voters and was vice president and member of the board of Hevreh of Southern Berkshire. She also served on the board of the Berkshires Federation of Jewish Philanthropics. She also was active in the Berkshire Institute of Lifelong Learning and chairman of its curriculum committee. While in New York, she was a founding member of the North Shore Child Guidance Association and president of the Northside Elementary School PTA and Wheatley School PTO. She was dedicated to Jewish causes, having served as president of the Nassau (N.Y.) County Council of Jewish Women and chairman of the Women's Division of Nassau County United Jewish Appeal. She later served two terms as chairman of the UJA Women's Division for the New York metropolitan area. Her husband, Alexander Sack, whom she married Sept. 5, 1937, died in 1992. She and her husband enjoyed boating and traveling. After his retirement, they lived in Manhattan, N.Y., Mexico City, Mexico, Mission Viejo, Calif., and Sarasota, Fla. She leaves a son, Richard Sack of Bayville, N.Y.; a daughter, Beth Sack of West Stockbridge, and three grandsons. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for the late Eleanor Sack, who died April 4, 2005, will be conducted tomorrow, April 6, at 11 at FINNERTY AND STEVENS FUNERAL HOME in Great Barrington by Rabbi Deborah Zecher, spiritual leader of Hevreh of Southern Berkshire. Memorial contributions may be made to Jewish Federation of the Berkshires or to the League of Women Voters through the funeral home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. She and her husband enjoyed many adventures on their boat. Her boundless optimism, energy and enthusiasm were inspirational to all. She is also survived by her son-in-law, Stephan Green, and three grandsons, Graham Sack, Zachary Green and Ethan Green.
