James "Russ" Stockley Sr.

James "Russ" Stockley Sr., 83, of 88 Moores Road died at Sweet Brook Care Centers in Williamstown on March 24 following a long illness. Born in Pittsfield on Jan. 17, 1922, son of Walter J. and Margaret Horrigan Stockley, he attended local schools. A career seaman, Mr. Stockley served for more than 18 years in the Navy Seabees, including during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He retired in September 1969 as a builder, first class.Before that, he was a union carpenter. He enjoyed fishing. He and his wife, the former Evelyn M. Sykes, were married June 18, 1952. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, James R. Stockley Jr. of the town of Washington; two stepsons, James H. Berne of the town of Washington and George Berne of the town of Florida; a daughter, Maxine Phillips of Savannah, Ga.; a sister, Rita Paradise of Lenox; 21 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- James "Russ" Stockley Sr., age 83, died March 24, 2005. In keeping with his wishes there will be no funeral or calling hours. Mr. Stockley chose to advance the cause of medical studies at Harvard Medical School. DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME has been entrusted with the arrangements.
