Robert Heflich Levy

Robert Heflich Levy, 86, of 150 Ashland St. died Sunday afternoon at North Adams Regional Hospital, where he had been admitted earlier in the day. Born in Manhattan, N.Y., on Sept. 6, 1918, son of Abram and Madeline Heflich Levy, he attended schools there and graduated from James Madison High School. He also graduated from St. John's University in New York with a degree in pharmacy. An Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, he was stationed in Alaska. A pharmacist, Mr. Levy was first employed by Walgreen's in New York. He later owned a chain of drugstores in New York, retiring in 1989. He moved to North Adams in 1998. He was active in the Lions Club in New York and with many other charities. He enjoyed reading. His wife, the former Katharyn Burkitt, whom he married Jan. 3, 1949, died Dec. 24, 1997. He leaves two sons, Michael B. Levy of North Miami Beach, Fla., and William B. Levy of New York; two daughters, Madeline A. Levy of Williamstown and Lina K. Levy of New York; two sisters, Elena Meltzer of New York and Leila Domenico of California, and four grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Graveside committal services for Robert Levy, who died May 22, 2005, will be today, May 24, at noon at the family lot in Amityville (N.Y.) Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to St. John's University in care of FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, MA 01247, which is in charge of arrangements. Survivors include four grandchildren, Joseph Levy and Kyla Levy of North Miami Beach, Katie Padavano of New York, and Katelin Marchand of Williamstown. Mr. Levy was recognized in his business for his fair hiring practices, including hiring women and minorities.
