John A. Scire

John A. Scire, 84, of Fairview Terrace and North Bellmore, N.Y., died yesterday at Soyosett Hospital on Long Island, N.Y. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on March 17, 1921, son of Giacomo and Josephine Maggio Scire, he was a 1939 graduate of John Adams High School in New York. He moved to Great Barrington in 1986 from Queens, N.Y. A Marine Corps veteran of World War II, he served with the 4th Division on Iwo Jima, and obtained the rank of sergeant. Mr. Scire was owner and innkeeper of Briarcliff Motel for three years, until 1989. While in New York City, he was a police detective. He was a member of the Marine Corps Association. His wife, the former Muriel Nadolski, whom he married Nov. 5, 1949, died May 22, 1999. He leaves two daughters, Robin Gruter of North Bellmore and Meighan Scire of Great Barrington; three sisters, Pauline Carubia of Ozone Park, N.Y., Antoinette Gropper of Sarasota, Fla., and Annette Mayer of Marlboro, Md., and three grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The military funeral for John A. Scire, who died Tuesday, May 24, 2005, will be Friday, May 27, at 10 at BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 11 at St. Peter's Church by the Rev. Shaun O'Connor, MIC. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home tomorrow, May 26, from 4 to 7. Expressions of sympathy in John's memory may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Association in care of the funeral home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. He leaves his grandchildren, Jody and Christopher Gruter and Kendall Scire, and his dog, Simon. He was fun-loving and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
