Evelyn E. Martel

Evelyn E. Martel, 87, of Lacona Street died Monday at home. Born in North Adams on Dec. 30, 1917, daughter of Christian J. and Lea M. Boutin Benz, she attended schools there. She home-schooled herself and scored in the top 10 on her licensed practical nursing exam. She also resided in Cornwall, Ontario, and Adams, moving to Savoy in 1953, and later to Royal Palm Beach, Fla. Mrs. Martel was employed as a nurse by the former Hillcrest Hospital in Pittsfield for several years. She also worked at the former Adams Nursing Home in Williamstown and North Adams Regional Hospital. She had been a co-owner of the former Red's Hideaway in Savoy. She was a Eucharistic minister at Our Lady Queen of Apostles in Royal Palm Beach. She enjoyed music and dancing. Her husband, Omer D. Martel, whom she married in 1937 in Cornwall, died December 1994. She leaves two sons, Rene Audre Omer Martel of Cheshire and Raymond Ronald Martel of North Carolina; two daughters, Aline Margaret Duprey Delisle of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Annette R. Sarkis, with whom she resided; four sisters, Katherine Benz Boulerice of Cheshire, Mary Benz Bourdon of Adams, Christina Benx LeMay of the state of Florida and Veronica Benz Walker of the state of Florida; 21 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The Liturgy of christian Death and Burial for Evelyn Martel, who died May 30, 2005, will be celebrated Thursday, June 2, at 11 at St. Mary's Church in Cheshire. At the request of the family, there will be no visiting hours. Interment will be in Lake Worth (Fla.) Memory Gardens.
