Mary D. Thorne

Mary D. Thorne, 89, of 32 Old Stockbridge Road died early Wednesday morning at home. Born in Liverpool, England, on Feb. 15, 1916, daughter of Thomas and Annie Thomas Dennitts, she earned a degree in nursing from the London Hospital Nursing School. While in England, she worked at London Hospital until 1950 and then in Wales, England, from 1953 to 1963, when she came to the United States. Mrs. Thorne was last employed by Miss Hall's School, retiring in 2000. She worked at Miss Hall's from 1970 to 1975 as a school nurse, head of housekeeping and director of residence, and returned there in 1986. She also worked at Austen Riggs Center in Stockbridge and at Simon's Rock Early College in Great Barrington as the school nurse and head of residence until 1970. She held positions in the households of Arlo Guthrie, Leonard Bernstein and Joan Ganz Cooney. In addition to classical music, she enjoyed flowers, doing crossword puzzles, reading the newspaper, and the company of friends and family. She leaves a daughter, Elizabeth Post of Housatonic; three sons, Adam Thorne of Pereshore, England, David Thorne of Dalton and Peter Thorne of West Stockbridge; a brother, James Dennitts of Tattenhall, England, 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Memorial Service for Mary D. Thorne will be Friday, June 24, at 11 at the First Congregational Church of Dalton with the Rev. Robert Kyte, pastor, officiating. Following cremation, burial will be at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to the Berkshire Music School of Pittsfield or the Lee Regional Visiting Nurses Association in care of the ROCHE FUNERAL HOME, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240.
