Carmella Maria Oakes

Carmella Maria Oakes, 94, of 170 Middlefield Road died Sunday afternoon at Mount Greylock Extended Care Facility in Pittsfield, where she had resided since Oct. 2002. Born in Pittsfield on May 2, 1911, daughter of Samuel and Maria Saveria Caranta Frusciente, she attended Pittsfield schools. Mrs. Oakes was a seamstress at the former Berkshire Coat Factory in Pittsfield, and was a housekeeper at the former Pittsfield General Hospital (now Berkshire Medical Center), the former Mapleview Nursing Home in Washington, and the former Ashmere Nursing Home in Hinsdale. As a child, she picked blueberries to help support her family. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and gardening. Her husband, Harry Edward Oakes, whom she married in 1932, died June 23, 1986. She leaves five sons, Harry E. Oakes, Jr., of Alpine, Calif., Nelson E. Oakes of Chester, Louis D. Oakes of Pittsfield, and Donald E. Oakes and Raymond O. Oakes, both of Peru; a daughter, Caroline L. Oakes of Huntington Beach, Calif.; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for Mrs. Oakes will be held Thursday, Oct. 13 at 10:15 a.m. from DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church in Hinsdale, celebrated by the Rev. Christopher A. Malatesta, pastor. Burial will follow in Maple St. Cemetery, Hinsdale. Calling hours will be today from 4 to 7 at the funeral home, 890 E. Main St., Dalton. Mrs. Oakes was pre-deceased by three brothers, Martin, Joseph and Dominic; a sister, Madeline Avery; a grandson, Larry Oakes, and a niece, Rachael Avery.
