Russell T. Coons

Russell T. Coons, 81, of 54 Holmes Road, died Monday morning at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Pittsfield on Aug. 14, 1924, son of Horace H. and Mildred Smith Coons, he attended Pittsfield schools and was a 1942 graduate of Pittsfield High School. An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the European Theater as a Corporal in the 136th Antiaircraft Artillery Gun Battalion, part of the 9th Division of Gen. Patton's army. He received five battle stars as part of the force that landed on Omaha Beach on D-day in 1944. Mr. Coons was a tool and die maker at Marland Mold in Pittsfield, retiring in 1987. He was also a machinist at GE and a bus driver for the Lenox Public School system. He was a charter member and former Deputy Chief of the New Lenox Fire Company and was instrumental in its founding in 1955. He was a member of the Stickles-Turnure VFW Post of Lenox, the Mac-Car-Nell American Legion Post in Lenox Dale, the Mystic Lodge of A.F. & A.M., and the Lenox Sportsman Club. An avid skier, he was a member of the Ski Patrol at the Thunderbolt Trail on Mount Greylock. He enjoyed spending time at the sea shore, reading, music and being with friends and family. He and his wife, the former Dolores E. Williams-Rohman, were married Aug. 10, 1946. Besides his wife, he also leaves a son, Randall T. Coons of Lee; three daughters, Wendy E. Armstrong of Lee, Beverly J. Pittman of Pittsfield and Shirley A. Kroboth-Piche of Stephentown, N.Y.; seven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a grandson, Shane Russell Kroboth, on Aug. 6, 2002. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Eric Dupee, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Coons' memory may be made to the charity or fund of one's choice, in care of ROCHE FUNERAL HOME, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240. He also leaves his loving grandchildren, Jeffrey R. Coons, Kelly J. Bianco, Kimberly J. Jones, Kacie L. Armstrong, Jamie L. Pittman, Fred J. Pittman, Jr., and Ashley M. Kroboth; his two step-granddaughters, Kelly M. Piche and Jennifer R. Pittman; a daughter-in-law, Kathleen A. Coons; three sons-in-law, Michael L. Armstrong, Fred J. Pittman and Michael J. Piche, and his beloved five great-grandchildren.
