John J. Astore

John J. Astore, 96, of 273 Great Barrington Road died Friday at Fairview Commons, where he had resided briefly. A former town assessor, he served for 40 years. Born in the province of Salerno, Italy, on Jan. 13, 1909, son of Henry J. and Maria Gulucci Astore, he moved to West Stockbridge as a child and was a 1928 graduate of the former Williams High School in Stockbridge and a 1932 graduate of the former Massachusetts State College, now the University of Massachusetts. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. A builder, he owned and operated the former John J. Astore Construction company, retiring in 2002. He built housing developments in West Stockbridge, Lee, Stockbridge, Pittsfield and Canaan, N.Y. He was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church and a member of the West Stockbridge Grange and American Legion. He leaves nieces and nephews. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial for John J. Astore, who died Friday, Dec. 23, 2005, will be celebrated tomorrow at 10 at St. Patrick's Church by the Rev. Christopher J. Waitekus, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Patrick's Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME is in charge of arrangements. He leaves many nieces and nephews.
