Jean Mattimore

Jean Mattimore, 96, of 287 Mohawk Forest Boulevard, died Monday at North Adams Commons. She was a resident of Clarksburg for 75 years before moving to North Adams. Born in Tillicoultry, Scotland, on April 15, 1909, daughter of David and Mary Connell Nicol, she immigrated to the United States in 1923 at the age of 14. She attended schools in North Adams, including Drury High School. Mrs. Mattimore was employed by the former Strong-Hewat woolen mill in Clarksburg for more than 30 years until it ceased operations. She was last employed by Sprague Electric Co., retiring in 1975. She was a longtime member of First Congregational Church and a longtime volunteer at North Adams Regional Hospital. True to her Scottish heritage, for many years she was active in the Daughters of Scotia. She was elected chief daughter of Lady Argyle Lodge 79 and was grand deputy to lodges in Pittsfield and in Albany and Schenectady, N.Y. She was president of the Briggsville Parent Teacher Association and the Briggsville Women's Club and a volunteer for the American Red Cross. Her husband, Francis Joseph Mattimore, whom she married July 4, 1935, died Sept. 8, 1974. She leaves two sons, David R. Mattimore of Stamford, Vt., and Francis D. Mattimore of Los Angeles; a brother, James Nicol of North Adams; seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. A daughter, Mary Ellen Mattimore, died in infancy. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral to celebrate the life of Jean Nicol Mattimore, who died Jan. 9, 2006, will be conducted tomorrow, Jan. 12, at 11 at First Congregational Church of North Adams by the Rev. Jill Graham, pastor. Burial will take place in the spring in Clarksburg Cemetery. Calling hours at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, WEST CHAPEL, 521 West Main St., North Adams, will be Wednesday from 4 to 7. Memorial donations are suggested for VNA & Hospice of Northern Berkshire or First Congregational Church in North Adams. Survivors include a daughter-in-law, June "Terry" Mattimore; seven grandchildren, Mark, Michael, David, Christine and Denise Mattimore, Diane Lesniak and Mary Ellen Kelly. She was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Ellen Mattimore, and a brother, Charles Nicol.

I went to Briggsville school with David and Francis and would like to express my condolences. I have met their mother and she was a fine lady.
