Mary M. Coleman

Mary M. Coleman, 84, formerly of 21 Lakeview Drive, died Friday at Craneville Place in Dalton, where she had resided since 1999. Before that, she lived at Ashmere Manor in Hinsdale for three years. Born in Pittsfield on Dec. 18, 1921, daughter of Kenneth and Mary Burns Sykes, she was a 1939 graduate of St. Joseph High School and attended the former Stevens Business College. During World War II, she was employed by General Electric Co. In 1950, she moved to Ashby and was employed for many years by Burbank Hospital in Fitchburg in the accounts department. While in Ashby, Mrs. Coleman was active in the Red Cross and had served as president. She was also active in the Ashby School Parent Teacher Association, a Cub Scout den mother and a chaperone for the Kingsman Drum and Bugle Corps. She was a charter member of the Ashby Women's Club and a professional cake decorator. In 1974, she moved to Hinsdale and was employed as office manager of the Pittsfield Visiting Nurse Association for 10 years. While in the Berkshires, she attended St. Joseph's Church in Pittsfield. She and her husband, Donald L. Coleman Jr., were married July 15, 1943. He died March 20, 2003. She leaves three sons, Donald L. Coleman III of West Point, Va., Bruce B. Coleman of Schodack, N.Y., and Michael J. Coleman of County Mayo, Ireland; a daughter, Patricia L. Pichette of Leominster; 12 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Mary M. Coleman, who died Jan. 20, 2006, will be conducted Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006, at 2 at WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield by the Rev. Michael Shershanovich, pastor of St. Joseph's Church. Burial will be in the spring in Maple Street Cemetery in Hinsdale. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Wednesday from 1 to 2. Among survivors are her daughter-in-law, Susan Coleman of Ireland, and her son-in-law, John Pichette of Leominster. A brother, K. John Sykes, and a sister, Alice Power, predeceased her. If friends desire, donations in her memory are suggested to the Ashby Red Cross in care of the funeral home, 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
