Howard S. Frye

Howard S. Frye, 79 of 58 Meadow Lane died Saturday at his home. Born in Adams on Sept. 5, 1926, son of the late Howard Frye and Anita Fitzroy Frye, he attended schools in New Ashford and also attended the former Williamstown High School. A veteran of World War II, he enlisted in the Navy on Sept. 29, 1944, and served as a ship's cook third class aboard the USS Screven in Guam until his honorable discharge on June 26, 1946. Mr. Frye was employed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for 42 years, first as a foreman with the Insect Pest Control Division of the Department of Natural Resources and later as a forester for the Department of Environmental Management until retiring in 1985. He also owned a tree farm in New Ashford, where he sold Christmas trees. He moved to Lanesboro in 1970, where he sold Christmas trees from his property. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved animals, especially his two cats. He leaves his wife, the former Helen Olson, whom he married on Aug. 23, 1950, in the Second Congregational Church in South Williamstown. He also leaves two sons, Bruce A. Frye of Clarksburg and Scott D. Frye of Adams; a daughter, Wendy Frye of Charlotte, N.C.; a brother, Winthrop Frye of New Ashford; a sister, Margaret Gomes of Huntsville, Ala.; five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Graveside committal services with Veteran's Honors for Howard S. Frye, who died Feb. 4, 2006, will take place at a time to be announced in the family lot in Southlawn Cemetery in Williamstown. There are no calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to the Lanesboro Volunteer Fire Department in care of FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS -- WEST CHAPELS at 521 West Main St. North Adams, MA 01247, which is in charge of arrangements. Howard leaves behind his beloved cats, "Iodine" and "Sara." He also leaves several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Lillian Frye and Frances MacAulay.
